Palate Profile

Despite initially challenging weather, the 2018 Bordeaux vintage resulted in wines of excellent quality. The Amiral de Beychevelle is dominated by a purity of the fruit, the finesse of the tannins and elegant oaky notes that come together to offer a silky palate. Château Beychevelle 2018 is a harmonious marriage between the elegance and precision of Cabernet Sauvignon and the generosity and roundness of the Merlot.

The final blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon 62%, Merlot 27% & Cabernet Franc 11%. The rigorous selection process undergone by Château Beychevelle results in the creation of its second wine, Amiral de Beychevelle. Despite being made from young vines, Amiral de Beychevelle benefits from the same growing techniques, meticulous sorting, and traditional barrel ageing.

Critic Awards

A rock star of a second wine already offering pleasure, the 2018 Amiral De Beychevelle comes from the younger vines of the estate and slightly more sandy soils. This makes for a more up-front, fruit-driven wine. It's classic Bordeaux on the nose, yet has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and just a balanced, seamless style that's ideal for enjoying over the coming 10-15 years.

On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy cassis, small red berries and small notes of cherry associated with touches of fresh violet, fresh lily, a racy minerality as well as hints of toasted, chocolate and liquorice. Good length. Tannins are racy and offer a fine firmness.

Dark fruit with cedar and herbal notes on the nose. Some meat, too. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Juicy and savory character on the palate with a balanced structure. Flavorful finish. Second wine. Try after 2023 when it will be more together.
